< 여러분은 그리스도를 보지 못하지만, 그분을 사랑하고 믿기에 이루 말할 수 없는 기쁨 속에서 즐거워하고 있습니다. >

해설) 그리스도인의 믿음은 많은 단련을 받아 순수하게 되어 예수님께서 나타나시는 날에 영광과 영예를 차지하게 될 것입니다. 참 그리스도인은 예수 그리스도를 본 일이 없으면서도 그분을 사랑하고 그분을 보지 못하면서도 믿고 있으며 또 말할 수 없는 영광스러운 기쁨으로 넘쳐있습니다. 그것은 믿음으로 구원받았기 때문입니다.

3 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 아버지 하느님께서 찬미받으시기를 빕니다. 하느님께서는 당신의 크신 자비로 우리를 새로 태어나게 하시어, 죽은 이들 가운데에서 다시 살아나신 예수 그리스도의 부활로 우리에게 생생한 희망을 주셨고, 4 또한 썩지 않고 더러워지지 않고 시들지 않는 상속 재산을 얻게 하셨습니다. 이 상속 재산은 여러분을 위하여 하늘에 보존되어 있습니다. 5 여러분은 마지막 때에 나타날 준비가 되어 있는 구원을 얻도록, 여러분의 믿음을 통하여 하느님의 힘으로 보호를 받고 있습니다. 6 그러니 즐거워하십시오. 여러분이 지금 얼마 동안은 갖가지 시련을 겪으며 슬퍼하지 않을 수 없습니다. 7 그러나 그것은 불로 단련을 받고도 결국 없어지고 마는 금보다 훨씬 값진 여러분의 믿음의 순수성이 예수 그리스도께서 나타나실 때에 밝혀져, 여러분이 찬양과 영광과 영예를 얻게 하려는 것입니다. 8 여러분은 그리스도를 본 일이 없지만 그분을 사랑합니다. 여러분은 지금 그분을 보지 못하면서도 그분을 믿기에, 이루 말할 수 없는 영광스러운 기쁨 속에서 즐거워하고 있습니다. 9 여러분의 믿음의 목적인 영혼의 구원을 얻을 것이기 때문입니다.

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his great mercy gave us a new birth to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you 5 who by the power of God are safeguarded through faith, to a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the final time. 6 In this you rejoice, although now for a little while you may have to suffer through various trials, 7 so that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold that is perishable even though tested by fire, may prove to be for praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 Although you have not seen him you love him; even though you do not see him now yet you believe in him, you rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, 9 as you attain the goal of faith, the salvation of your souls.

묵상) 하느님께서는 당신의 자비로 우리를 다시 낳아 주시고 예수님을 죽은 자들 가운데서 다시 살리심으로써 우리에게 참 희망을 주십니다. 하느님께서는 우리의 믿음을 보시고 당신 힘으로 우리를 보호해 주시며 마지막 때에 나타나기로 되어 있는 그 구원을 얻게 하여주십니다. 그러므로 그리스도인은 진정 기뻐해야 합니다.

+ 마르코 10, 17-27

< 가진 것을 팔고 나를 따라라. >

해설) 부자가 영원한 생명을 얻기 위해서는 먼저 하느님 사랑의 계명을 지켜야 합니다. 이 부자가 영원한 생명을 얻기 위해 한 가지 더 해야 할 일은 그리스도를 따르는 것입니다. 그러자면 먼저 가진 것을 다 팔아 가난한 이들에게 나누어 주어야 합니다. 그러나 부자는 재물에 대한 욕심 때문에 자기 재산을 포기할 수 없는 것입니다.

그때에 17 예수님께서 길을 떠나시는데 어떤 사람이 달려와 그분 앞에 무릎을 꿇고, “선하신 스승님, 제가 영원한 생명을 받으려면 무엇을 해야 합니까?” 하고 물었다. 18 그러자 예수님께서 그에게 이르셨다. “어찌하여 나를 선하다고 하느냐? 하느님 한 분 외에는 아무도 선하지 않다. 19 너는 계명들을 알고 있지 않느냐? ‘살인해서는 안 된다. 간음해서는 안 된다. 도둑질해서는 안 된다. 거짓 증언을 해서는 안 된다. 횡령해서는 안 된다. 아버지와 어머니를 공경하여라.’” 20 그가 예수님께 “스승님, 그런 것들은 제가 어려서부터 다 지켜 왔습니다.” 하고 대답하였다. 21 예수님께서는 그를 사랑스럽게 바라보시며 이르셨다. “너에게 부족한 것이 하나 있다. 가서 가진 것을 팔아 가난한 이들에게 주어라. 그러면 네가 하늘에서 보물을 차지하게 될 것이다. 그리고 와서 나를 따라라.” 22 그러나 그는 이 말씀 때문에 울상이 되어 슬퍼하며 떠나갔다. 그가 많은 재물을 가지고 있었기 때문이다. 23 예수님께서 주위를 둘러보시며 제자들에게 말씀하셨다. “재물을 많이 가진 자들이 하느님 나라에 들어가기는 참으로 어렵다!” 24 제자들은 그분의 말씀에 놀랐다. 그러나 예수님께서는 그들에게 거듭 말씀하셨다. “얘들아, 하느님 나라에 들어가기는 참으로 어렵다! 25 부자가 하느님 나라에 들어가는 것보다 낙타가 바늘귀로 빠져나가는 것이 더 쉽다.” 26 그러자 제자들이 더욱 놀라서, “그러면 누가 구원받을 수 있는가?” 하고 서로 말하였다. 27 예수님께서는 그들을 바라보며 이르셨다. “사람에게는 불가능하지만 하느님께는 그렇지 않다. 하느님께는 모든 것이 가능하다.”

17 As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him,"Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" 18 Jesus answered him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. 19 You know the commandments: You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and your mother." 20 He replied and said to him, "Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth." 21 Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, "You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me." 22 At that statement, his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions. 23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the Kingdom of God!" 24 The disciples were amazed at his words. So Jesus again said to them in reply, "Children, how hard it is to enter the Kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the Kingdom of God." 26 They were exceedingly astonished and said among themselves, "Then who can be saved?" 27 Jesus looked at them and said, "For men it is impossible, but not for God. All things are possible for God."

묵상) 부자는 추종과 재물 중에 하나를 택해야 하는 상황에서 불행히도 재물을 택합니다. 돈만 있으면 무엇이든지 할 수 있는 이 세상에서 무소유란 참으로 어려운 일입니다. 그러기 때문에 욕심 많은 부자가 구원받기는 참으로 어려운 것입니다. 구원은 인간의 힘을 넘어서는 일이기에 주님의 사랑과 자비에 기댈 수밖에 없습니다.

예수님께서 부자에게 가진 것을 나누면 하늘의 보물을 차지하고 영생을 얻으리라고 하십니다. 부자에게 재물을 나누는 것은 자신의 믿음을 순수하게 하기 위한 단련 과정입니다. 그러나 그는 그 관문을 통과하지 못하고 슬퍼하며 떠나갑니다. 그리스도를 따르기 위해서 필요한 것은 순수한 믿음뿐입니다.

하느님의 나라와 부자

+ 마르코 10, 1-12

1. 부자청년은 열정적인 믿음을 갖고있는 좋은 사람이었습니다. 그는 예수님이 오신다는 소식을 듣고 기쁜 마음에 달려가 예수님을 만났지만 오히려 낙담하고 돌아갑니다. 그가 낙담한 이유는 무엇입니까? 그가 포기할 수 없었던 것 혹은 그에게 부족한 것은 무엇입니까?

2. 부자 청년의 모습속에서 나와 닮은 어떤 점을 발견할 수 있습니까? 나도 주님을 따른다면서 포기하지 못하고 움켜쥐고 있는 것이 있거나 어떤 것들이 나를 근심 속에 머물게 하지는 않습니까? 영적 풍요와 영원한 삶을 원하면서 짧은 육신의 삶과 금세 없어질 허무한 것에 집착하지는 않습니까? 나는 오늘 영원한 하느님의 나라에 들기 위해 무엇을 할지 묵상하며 '얘야, 너에게 부족한 것이 하나 있다"라는 예수님의 말씀에 머물러 보십시오.

1st Reading : 1 Peter 1:3-9

Rich young man meets Jesus

This week we turn to the first letter of St Peter and in our first reading for today Peter is preaching to the people about Christ and the kingdom. He is reminding the people that they believe in Christ even though they have never seen him and so their faith will bring them to everlasting happiness. The Jewish people regard the Promised Land as their “inheritance” and so Peter uses this word deliberately to show that the new inheritance – the new Promised Land – is to be found in heaven rather than here on earth. This inheritance is something which cannot be taken from us except by God.

In the Gospel from St Mark, we see a young man go away sad because he did not see that faith is a far more precious treasure than the gold he possessed. We are called to be like the people in the first reading – who believed though they had not seen Christ, unlike the young man in the Gospel.

Why does Jesus issue such a strong warning to the rich (as well as to the rest of us who desire to be rich)? Was he really against wealth? We know that Jesus was not opposed to wealth per se, nor was he opposed to the wealthy. He had many friends who were well-to-do, including some notorious tax collectors! One even became an apostle! Jesus' warning reiterated the teaching of the Old Testament wisdom: Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is perverse in his ways (Proverbs 28:6; see also Psalm 37:16). Do not wear yourself out to get rich; be wise enough to desist (Proverbs 23:4). Jesus seems to say that it is nearly impossible for the rich to live as citizens of God's kingdom. The camel was regarded as the largest animal in Palestine. The "eye of the needle" could be interpreted quite literally or it could figuratively describe the narow and low gate of the city walls which was used by travellers when the larger public gate was locked after dark. A normal sized man had to "lower" himself to enter that gate. A camel would literally have to knell and crawl through it.

Why is Jesus so cautious about wealth? Wealth can make us falsely independent. The church at Laodicea was warned about their attitude towards wealth and a false sense of security: "For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing" (Revelations 3:17). Wealth can also lead us into hurtful desires and selfishness (see 1 Tim. 6:9-10). Look at the lesson Jesus gave about the rich man and his sons who refused to aid the poor man Lazarus. They also neglected to serve God. The scriptures give us a paradox: we lose what we keep and we gain what we give away. Generosity will be amply repaid, both in this life and in eternity (Proverbs 3:9-10, Luke 6:38). Jesus offers us an incomparable treasure which no money can buy and no thief can steal. The thing we most set our heart on is our highest treasure. Material wealth will shackle us to this earth unless we guard our hearts and set our treasure on God and his everlasting kingdom. Where is your treasure?

Prayer "Lord, you have captured our hearts and opened to us the treasures of heaven. May you always be my treasure and delight and may nothing else keep me from giving you my all." - Amen

복녀 마르가리타 폴 (Blessed Margaret Pole)

영국 왕 에드워드 5세와 리처드 3세의 조카인 마르가리타 플란타제넷 폴(Margarita Plantagenet Pole)은 헨리 8세에 의해 리처드 폴(Richard Pole) 경과 결혼하게 되었다. 그러나 헨리 8세가 즉위했을 때에는 마르가리타는 5명의 자녀를 둔 과부였다. 5명의 자녀를 데리고 사는 그녀는 영국에서 성녀로 불릴 만큼 덕이 출중하여 헨리 8세가 솔즈베리(Salisbury)의 백작으로 그녀를 임명하는 등 많은 호의를 베풀었다.

그러나 헨리 8세가 앤 볼린(Ann Boleyn)과 결혼하자 그녀는 왕가와의 모든 인연을 끊어버리고 은둔생활을 하기 시작하였다. 이런 와중에 그녀의 넷째 아들인 레지날드 폴(Reginald Pole)이 왕의 수장령에 반대하는 글을 썼다. 이 사건으로 온 집안 식구가 모두 체포되어 투옥되었다. 그녀 역시 헨리 8세를 공격하였던 것이다. 그래서 그녀는 1541년 5월 28일에 참수형을 받고 장렬하게 순교하였다. 그녀는 1886년 교황 레오 13세(Leo XIII)에 의해 복자품에 올랐다.
