Monday of the Third Week of Easter

+ 사도행전 6, 8-15

< 그들은 스테파노의 말에서 드러나는 지혜와 성령에 대항할 수가 없었다. >

해설) 스테파노는 은총과 능력으로 충만하여 백성들 앞에서 많은 기적과 표징을 행합니다. 스테파노는 헬라계 출신의 유다인들과 논쟁을 벌이는데, 그들이 스테파노의 지혜와 성령에 대항할 수 없음을 깨닫자 사람들을 선동하여 스테파노를 최고 의회에 고발합니다. 죄목은 거룩한 성전과 율법을 거스른 나자렛 예수를 선전한다는 것입니다.

그 무렵 8 은총과 능력이 충만한 스테파노는 백성 가운데에서 큰 이적과 표징들을 일으켰다. 9 그때에 이른바 해방민들과 키레네인들과 알렉산드리아인들과 킬리키아와 아시아 출신들의 회당에 속한 사람 몇이 나서서 스테파노와 논쟁을 벌였다. 10 그러나 그의 말에서 드러나는 지혜와 성령에 대항할 수가 없었다. 11 그래서 그들은 사람들을 선동하여, “우리는 그가 모세와 하느님을 모독하는 말을 들었습니다.” 하고 말하게 하였다. 12 또 백성과 원로들과 율법 학자들을 부추기고 나서, 느닷없이 그를 붙잡아 최고 의회로 끌고 갔다. 13 거기에서 거짓 증인들을 내세워 이런 말을 하게 하였다. “이 사람은 끊임없이 이 거룩한 곳과 율법을 거슬러 말합니다. 14 사실 저희는 그 나자렛 사람 예수가 이곳을 허물고 또 모세가 우리에게 물려준 관습들을 뜯어고칠 것이라고, 이자가 말하는 것을 들었습니다.” 15 그러자 최고 의회에 앉아 있던 사람들이 모두 스테파노를 유심히 바라보았는데, 그의 얼굴은 천사의 얼굴처럼 보였다.

8 Stephen, filled with grace and power, was working great wonders and signs among the people.9 Certain members of the so-called Synagogue of Freedmen, Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and people from Cilicia and Asia, came forward and debated with Stephen, 10 but they could not withstand the wisdom and the spirit with which he spoke. 11 Then they instigated some men to say, “We have heard him speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God.” 12 They stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes, accosted him, seized him, and brought him before the Sanhedrin. 13 They presented false witnesses who testified, “This man never stops saying things against this holy place and the law. 14 For we have heard him claim that this Jesus the Nazorean will destroy this place and change the customs that Moses handed down to us.” 15 All those who sat in the Sanhedrin looked intently at him and saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

묵상) 하느님에 대한 모독이 스테파노에게 씨워진 죄목입니다. 예수님을 상대로 투쟁했던 원로들과 율법학자들은 백성들을 선동하여 예수님을 고발했던 것과 같은 방법으로 스테파노를 고발합니다. 유다 지도자들이 예수님의 권능 앞에서 무력감을 느꼈던 것처럼 스테파노의 지혜와 성령 앞에서 무력감을 느껴서 억지를 부린 것입니다.

< 너희는 썩어 없어질 양식을 얻으려고 힘쓰지 말고 길이 남아 영원한 생명을 누리게 하는 양식을 얻으려고 힘써라. >

해설) 영원한 생명에 이르는 천상 양식은 인간의 노력으로 얻어지는 것이 아니라 하느님의 선물로 주어지는 것으로서 약속된 양식입니다. 이 양식은 지속적으로 효력을 발휘하는 양식으로서 길이 남아 있을 양식이고 영원한 생명을 누리도록 하기 위한 양식이며 사람의 아들이 주는 양식입니다. 이 양식은 천상적 선물입니다.

예수님께서 오천 명을 먹이신 뒤, 제자들은 호수 위를 걸어오시는 예수님을 보았다. 22 이튿날, 호수 건너편에 남아 있던 군중은, 그곳에 배가 한 척밖에 없었는데 예수님께서 제자들과 함께 그 배를 타고 가지 않으시고 제자들만 떠났다는 것을 알게 되었다. 23 그런데 티베리아스에서 배 몇 척이, 주님께서 감사를 드리신 다음 빵을 나누어 먹이신 곳에 가까이 와 닿았다. 24 군중은 거기에 예수님도 계시지 않고 제자들도 없는 것을 알고서, 그 배들에 나누어 타고 예수님을 찾아 카파르나움으로 갔다. 25 그들은 호수 건너편에서 예수님을 찾아내고, “라삐, 언제 이곳에 오셨습니까?” 하고 물었다. 26 예수님께서 그들에게 대답하셨다. “ 내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 말한다. 너희가 나를 찾는 것은 표징을 보았기 때문이 아니라 빵을 배불리 먹었기 때문이다. 27 너희는 썩어 없어질 양식을 얻으려고 힘쓰지 말고, 길이 남아 영원한 생명을 누리게 하는 양식을 얻으려고 힘써라. 그 양식은 사람의 아들이 너희에게 줄 것이다. 하느님 아버지께서 사람의 아들을 인정하셨기 때문이다.” 28 그들이 “하느님의 일을 하려면 저희가 무엇을 해야 합니까?” 하고 묻자, 29 예수님께서 그들에게 대답하셨다. “하느님의 일은 그분께서 보내신 이를 너희가 믿는 것이다.”

22 The next day, the crowd that remained across the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not gone along with his disciples in the boat, but only his disciples had left. 23 Other boats came from Tiberias near the place where they had eaten the bread when the Lord gave thanks. 24 When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into boats and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus. 25 And when they found him across the sea they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” 26 Jesus answered them and said, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled. 27 Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him the Father, God, has set his seal.” 28 So they said to him, “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.”

묵상) 예수님께서 세상에 참 생명을 주시기 때문에 예수님은 구원의 선물을 주시는 분이며, 또한 당신 자신을 생명의 양식으로 제공하기 때문에 진정 구원을 주시는 분입니다. 하느님께서 요구하시는 것은 당신께서 파견하신 이 예수님을 우리가 믿는 것 단 한가지뿐입니다. 예수님은 우리 모두의 참 생명의 양식이기 때문입니다.

사람은 누구나 행복을 추구합니다. 소유하거나 성취하면 행복할 것이라고 여깁니다. 그러나 많은 것을 소유해도 행복하지 않음도 경험합니다. 사람의 욕심은 자라고 커지기 때문입니다. 예수님께서는 나누는 사람이 행복하다고 하십니다. 모든 행복의 원천은 하느님 안에 있습니다. 우리가 하느님만을 믿을 때 진정 행복해질 것입니다.

+ 요한 6,22-29

1. 예수님은 군중들에게 그들이 찾아 온 이유가 기적을 체험하고 예수님의 가르침을 이해하였기 때문이 아니고, 빵을 배불리 먹었기 때문이라고 말씀하십니다. 내가 예수님을 찾는 이유는 무엇 때문입니까? 나는 지금 어떤 양식을 찾고 있습니까? 나의 영혼의 허기를 달래 줄 영적 양식입니까? 아니면 성서의 말씀대로 썩어 없어질 육적인 양식을 찾고 있습니까? 예수님께서 내게 주시려는 양식은 어떤 것입니까?

2. 사람의 아들이 주는 영원한 양식은 무엇입니까? 그 양식은 어떻게 얻을 수 있습니까? 또 하느님의 일을 하기 위해 나는 무엇을 어떻게 해야 합니까? 하느님의 뜻을 잘 이해하고 따르기 위해 주님께 믿음의 은총을 청해 보십시오.

The crowds at Galilee seek out Jesus

Today’s first reading sees the arrest of St Stephen for proclaiming the message of Christ and the Gospel. Stephen is undaunted because all that he says is being guided by the Holy Spirit and Stephen is content – so much so that “his face appeared to them like the face of an angel.”

In the gospel, we have the continuation of the sixth chapter of St John and in it we see the people following Jesus because they want more of the bread that he had given them. He tells them that the bread they must work and long for is the bread of eternal life and that they must believe in him. We are called to believe in Christ even to the point of suffering for him like Stephen did.

What do you most hunger for – health, wealth, love, truth, life? Jesus addressed this issue with those who sought him after the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves. Where they simply hungry for things which satisfy the body or for that which satisfies the heart and soul?Jesus echoes the question posed by the prophet Isaiah: "Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy" ? There are two kinds of hunger -- physical and spiritual. Only God can satisfy the spiritual hunger in our heart and soul -- the hunger for truth, for life, and for love. Jesus also spoke about the works of God and what we must do to be doing the works of God, namely to believe in God's Son whom he has sent into the world. Jesus offers a new relationship with God which issues in a new kind of life: A life of love and service, and the forgiveness of others which corresponds to God's mercy and kindness; a life of holiness and purity which corresponds to God's holiness; and a life of submission and trust which corresponds to the wisdom of God. This is the work which Jesus directs us to and enables us to perform in the power of the Holy Spirit. Do you hunger for the bread which comes down from heaven and thirst for the words of everlasting life?

Prayer : "Lord, you alone can satisfy the deepest longing and hunger in our hearts. May I always hunger for the imperishable bread, that I may be satisfied in you alone as the True Bread of Heaven. Nourish and strengthen me that I may serve you with great joy, generosity, and zeal all the days of my life". - Amen

성녀 마리아 베르나데트 수비루 (St. Mary-Bernadette Soubirous)

성녀 마리아 베르나데트 수비루(Maria-Bernardette Soubirous)는 1844년 1월 7일 루르드에서 가난한 방앗간 주인인 프랑수아의 여섯 아이 중 맏딸로 태어났다. 14세 때의 그녀는 번민하는 듯한 인상에다가 보통보다 작은 소녀로서 민감하나 쾌활한 기질이 있었으며. 다소 발육이 늦은 듯했다고 한다.

1858년 2월 11일과 7월 16일까지, 그녀는 루르드의 가브(Gave) 강변에 있는 마사비엘르 바위에서 동정 성모 마리아의 발현을 체험하였다. 18 차례에 걸쳐 그녀는 매우 젊고 아름다운 부인을 보았는데, 그 부인이 자신에게 여러 가지 요구를 하였다. 이 부인이 나중에 ‘원죄 없이 잉태되신 성모’로 호칭하게 되는 동정 마리아로 인정받게 되었다. 이러한 기적이 일어나는 곳에는 소문을 듣고 몰려든 수많은 사람들이 있었지만, 마리아 베르나데트를 제외하고는 어느 누구도 그 ‘부인’을 보지 못하고 그 말씀도 듣지 못하였으나. 무슨 혼란이나 정신적인 이상은 전혀 없었다.

그러나 그 발현이 있고난 다음부터 거짓 환시가 유행병처럼 번졌으나, 교회 당국은 그녀의 체험에 대하여 올바른 자세를 견지하였다. 몇 년 후 그녀는 의심 많은 불신자들로부터 심한 고통을 받았으나, 이 모든 것을 영웅적인 용기와 품위로써 물리쳤다. 1866년에 그녀는 프랑스 느베르(Nevers)의 사랑의 자매 수녀회에 입회하였다. 여기서 그녀는 대중적으로 알려지는 위험을 피할 수 있게 되었다. “나는 내 일을 계속하고자 합니다.” “무슨 일이오?” 이때 그녀의 대답은 “아픈 일”이라고 하였다.

그녀는 35세에 임종을 맞이할 때까지 표면에 드러나지 않는 삶을 살았다. 성녀 마리아 베르나데트는 1925년 6월 14일 복자품에 오른 후, 1933년 12월 8일 교황 비오 11세(Pius XI)에 의해 시성되었다. 마리아 베르나데트가 시성된 것은 그녀가 성모 발현을 보았기 때문이 아니라, 그녀의 겸허한 단순성과 그녀의 전 생애를 통해 보여 주었던 절대로 의심하지 않은 신뢰심 때문이었다.
