Saturday of the Seventeenth week in Ordinary Time

+ 레위기 25, 1. 8-17

< 희년에 너희는 저마다 제 소유지를 되찾아야 한다. >

해설) 칠년마다 한 해씩 안식년에 땅을 갈지 않고 쉬게 합니다. 그것은 주 하느님을 땅의 유일한 소유주로서 존경해야 한다는 것을 생각하게 하는 안식년에 관한 법입니다. 안식년 법은 모든 땅이 하느님의 소유임을 전제로 합니다. 그것은 모든 백성에게 땅과 그 소출을 골고루 나누도록 하기 위함입니다.

1 주님께서 시나이 산에서 모세에게 이르셨다. 8 “너희는 안식년을 일곱 번, 곧 일곱 해를 일곱 번 헤아려라. 그러면 안식년이 일곱 번 지나 마흔아홉 해가 된다. 9 그 일곱째 달 초열흘날 곧 속죄일에 나팔 소리를 크게 울려라. 너희가 사는 온 땅에 나팔 소리를 울려라. 10 너희는 이 오십 년째 해를 거룩한 해로 선언하고, 너희 땅에 사는 모든 주민에게 해방을 선포하여라. 이 해는 너희의 희년이다. 너희는 저마다 제 소유지를 되찾고, 저마다 자기 씨족에게 돌아가야 한다. 11 이 오십 년째 해는 너희의 희년이다. 너희는 씨를 뿌려서도 안 되고, 저절로 자란 곡식을 거두어서도 안 되며, 저절로 열린 포도를 따서도 안 된다. 12 이 해는 희년이다. 그것은 너희에게 거룩한 해다. 너희는 밭에서 그냥 나는 것만을 먹어야 한다. 13 이 희년에 너희는 저마다 제 소유지를 되찾아야 한다. 14 너희가 동족에게 무엇을 팔거나 동족의 손에서 무엇을 살 때, 서로 속여서는 안 된다. 15 너희는 희년에서 몇 해가 지났는지 헤아린 다음 너희 동족에게서 사고, 그는 소출을 거둘 햇수를 헤아린 다음 너희에게 팔아야 한다. 16 그 햇수가 많으면 값을 올리고, 햇 수가 적으면 값을 내려야 한다. 그는 소출을 거둘 횟수를 너희에게 파는 것이다. 17 너희는 동족끼리 속여서는 안 된다. 너희는 너희 하느님을 경외해야 한다. 나는 주 너희 하느님이다.”

1 The LORD said to Moses on Mount Sinai, 8 "Seven weeks of years shall you count–seven times seven years– so that the seven cycles amount to forty-nine years. 9 Then, on the tenth day of the seventh month, let the trumpet resound; on this, the Day of Atonement, the trumpet blast shall re-echo throughout your land. 10 This fiftieth year you shall make sacred by proclaiming liberty in the land for all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you, when every one of you shall return to his own property,every one to his own family estate. 11 In this fiftieth year, your year of jubilee, you shall not sow, nor shall you reap the after growth or pick the grapes from the untrimmed vines. 12 Since this is the jubilee, which shall be sacred for you, you may not eat of its produce, except as taken directly from the field. 13 "In this year of jubilee, then, every one of you shall return to his own property. 14 Therefore, when you sell any land to your neighbor or buy any from him, do not deal unfairly. 15 On the basis of the number of years since the last jubilee shall you purchase the land from your neighbor; and so also, on the basis of the number of years for crops, shall he sell it to you. 16 When the years are many, the price shall be so much the more; when the years are few, the price shall be so much the less. For it is really the number of crops that he sells you. 17 Do not deal unfairly, then; but stand in fear of your God. I, the LORD, am your God."

묵상) 모하느님께서는 사람들에게 똑같은 자격으로 땅을 주어 모든 사람이 땅을 누리게 하십니다. 그래서 안식년과 희년의 규정은 인간들로 하여금 토지의 독점이나 축적 그리고 과다한 소비주의 등으로부터 자유로워지도록 하는 규정입니다. 참된 그리스도인들은 모든 날들이 바로 안식년이고 희년이 되어야 합니다.

< 헤로데는 사람을 보내어 요한의 목을 베게 하였다. 요한의 제자들이 예수님께 가서 알렸다 >

해설) 갈릴래아의 영주 헤로데 안티파스는 세례자 요한이 세례 운동의 인기를 악용하여 정치적 선동을 할까 두려워해서 그를 사해 동쪽에 있는 마케루스 천연 요새의 감옥에 가두었다가 처형하였습니다. 그러나 전승에 의하면 헤로데는 자기 동생 필립보의 아내 헤로디아의 일로 세례자 요한을 참수형에 처했다고 전해지고 있습니다.

1 그때에 헤로데 영주가 예수님의 소문을 듣고 2 시종들에게, “그 사람은 세례자 요한이다. 그가 죽은 이들 가운데에서 되살아난 것이다. 그러니 그에게서 그런 기적의 힘이 일어나지.” 하고 말하였다. 3 헤로데는 자기 동생 필리포스의 아내 헤로디아의 일로, 요한을 붙잡아 묶어 감옥에 가둔 일이 있었다. 4 요한이 헤로데에게 “그 여자를 차지하는 것은 옳지 않습니다.” 하고 여러 차례 말하였기 때문이다. 5 헤로데는 요한을 죽이려고 하였으나 군중이 두려웠다. 그들이 요한을 예언자로 여기고 있었기 때문이다. 6 그런데 마침 헤로데가 생일을 맞이하자, 헤로디아의 딸이 손님들 앞에서 춤을 추어 그를 즐겁게 해 주었다. 7 그래서 헤로데는 그 소녀에게, 무엇이든 청하는 대로 주겠다고 맹세하며 약속하였다. 8 그러자 소녀는 자기 어머니가 부추기는 대로, “세례자 요한의 머리를 쟁반에 담아 이리 가져다주십시오.” 하고 말하였다. 9 임금은 괴로웠지만, 맹세까지 하였고 또 손님들 앞이어서 그렇게 해 주라고 명령하고, 10 사람을 보내어 감옥에서 요한의 목을 베게 하였다. 11 그리고 그의 머리를 쟁반에 담아다가 소녀에게 주게 하자, 소녀는 그것을 자기 어머니에게 가져갔다. 12 요한의 제자들은 가서 그의 주검을 거두어 장사 지내고, 예수님께 가서 알렸다.

1 Herod the tetrarch heard of the reputation of Jesus 2 and said to his servants, "This man is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead;that is why mighty powers are at work in him." 3 Now Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip,4 for John had said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her." 5 Although he wanted to kill him, he feared the people, for they regarded him as a prophet. 6 But at a birthday celebration for Herod, the daughter of Herodias performed a dance before the guests and delighted Herod 7 so much that he swore to give her whatever she might ask for. 8 Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist." 9 The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests who were present, he ordered that it be given, 10 and he had John beheaded in the prison. 11 His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who took it to her mother. 12 His disciples came and took away the corpse and buried him; and they went and told Jesus.

묵상) 헤로디아의 충동질로 주님의 예언자인 요한을 죽일 수밖에 없었던 헤로데는 예수님께서 행하신 기적의 소문을 듣자 세례자 요한이 소생한 것으로 믿고 두려워합니다. 불의한 일을 저지른 사람은 두려움에 사로잡혀 살아갑니다. 하느님의 정의를 무시하고 자기 욕망에 따라 사는 사람은 늘 두려움 속에 살아갑니다.

어리석은 사람은 손바닥으로 하늘을 가릴 수 있다고 생각합니다. 자신이 행한 악을 남에게 전가하기도 하고 변명으로 덮으려고도 합니다. 사람을 속일 수 있을지는 몰라도 하느님께서는 우리의 마음 속 숨은 생각까지 알고 계십니다. 하느님 앞에 흠 없이 살아가고 바른 일을 하며 마음 속 진실을 말하는 사람만이 진정 의롭다고 인정받을 것입니다.

세례자 요한의 죽음

+ 마태오 14,1-12

1. 헤로데는 자신의 치부에 대해 바른 말을 하는 요한이 두려웠기에 헛된 약속을 하였고 그 맹세를 빌미로 주님의 예언자를 죽였습니다. 그가 저지른 불의는 무엇입니까? 그는 왜 정의롭지 못했습니까? 그 결과로 그가 얻은 것은 무엇입니까?

2. 나는 어떤 사람입니까? 내가 생각하는 정의와 의로움은 무엇입니까? 또 내가 두려운 것은 무엇입니까? 내 마음 속에 두려움이 있다면 무엇이 그것을 조정하고 있다고 생각합니까? 나는 내게 어떤 불이익이나 핍박이 가해 진다해도 세례자 요한처럼 정의를 외칠 수 있습니까? 사회 각 층에서 자행되고 있는 비리나 불의를 체험한 적이 있습니까?

Today’s Reflection :

Leviticus 25:1 / Matthew 14:1-12

In the text from Leviticus we read of the establishment of the jubilee year. The Lord instructs the people that every fiftieth year is to be a special year for them and they are to return to their own clans that year to celebrate the sacred jubilee. Part of the jubilee was also the practice of leaving the land fallow for that year to allow its fertility to return. It is a reminder that God is the Lord of Creation and the owner of all that exists.

In the Gospel text we read of the martyrdom of John the Baptist at the hands of Herod the Tetrarch. John died because of the vanity of Herod who had made a rash promise to a beautiful girl and was afraid to go back on it even though he knew that what he was about to do was wrong. It is not always easy to do the right thing but when it comes to the kingdom of God, the right thing is the only thing to do for it will secure our place in heaven alongside John the Baptist and those who gave their lives for the sake of the kingdom.

Father in heaven, Pour out your spirit upon us that we may have the courage and strength to boldly proclaim your gospel in word and in deed to all those we meet.In Jesus’ name. Amen.

성녀 논나에 대한 자세한 전기는 알 수 없으나 그녀는 그리스도인으로서 그레고리우스(Gregorius)란 사람과 결혼했는데, 남편은 카파도키아(Cappadocia)의 나지안주스의 지사였으며 유대인 이교인 그룹의 주요 멤버였다. 그녀는 오로지 자신의 표양만으로 남편을 그리스도인으로 개종시켰을 뿐만 아니라 사제가 되게 하였고, 그 후에는 주교까지 된 나지안주스의 성 그레고리우스(1월 1일)를 후원한 장본인이다. 그녀의 세 아이들 역시 모두 성인이 되었다. 나지안주스의 성 그레고리우스(1월 2일), 나지안주스의 성 카이사리우스(Caesarius, 2월 25일) 그리고 성녀 고르고니아(Gorgonia, 12월 9일)가 그들이다.
